When working with a woman with mental disabilities

  • Don’t assume that she is not, or will never be, sexually active
  • Don’t assume that she does not have the right to get pregnant
  • Don’t assume that family members always know what is best for the girl or woman
  • Explain to them that sterilisation or hysterectomies will not keep her safe from abuse or STIs
  • Explain to her what sterilisation means. Use pictures, illustrations and examples if possible
  • Ask her for permission, and remind her that the decision is in her hands. Help her make the right decision for her, not for the convenience of her caregivers
